We got a free day trip because we had booked 2 nights at our hostel so K, C, C and I hopped on the bus to Kilkenny. We drove along the coast which was beautiful and then up through the Wicklow mountains which was so pretty. A lot of famous movies have been filmed there so we were pointed out locations from Braveheart, P.S I Love you, BallyKiss Angel and other. We stopped at a lovely place where the driver dropped us off and we walked along a lake to a 6th Centurary monastic site in Glendalogh. It had incredibly old tombstones and an old tower with the door 12 feet of the ground. We had a nice cup of tea in a café and then back on the bus and we continued driving through the mountain ranges. We stopped at Brownshil Dolmen which is an old tomb site which has one enormous capstone resting off the ground on 2 smaller stones. I have no idea how they managed to move the big stone, it was so big and the info board said it weighed approx. 100 tonnes!!!
Got to Kilkenny where we saw the castle and watched an info video and then had lunch in the converted stables. Had a good laugh about something funny between Claudette and Christina about butter (ok maybe not so funny but the lack of sleep made it hilarious and I couldn’t stop laughing! Having a giggle now just remembering about it!) We walked along the high street but it was so cold and windy we were glad when it was time to get back on the bus and drive back to Dublin. But it was great to get out of the city and see more of the countryside.
We decided to go out for diner so we walked to a nice Irish pub called The Merchant’s Pub where I had a beef and Guinness pie (yes I’m getting into the Irish spirit!) Had a few drinks and listened to 2 guys singing with guitars and the occasional kazoo. Then we walked over to Temple Bar and listened to a band called ‘The Wild Rovers’ which I loved – included a guitar, a violin and a banjo with the singers. I bought their cd to remember their music. A very fun night spent with some amazing friends.
